Two techniques used for this shahsavan in orange tones: soumak* in the center (originally, front of the bag) and banded kilims (originally, back of the bag). Zoomorphs of peacocks and spiders.
The territory of the shahsavans is located south and west of the Caspian Sea, in Iranian Azerbaijan. Made up of Kurdish, Persian, Turkish, Tajik and Caucasian ethnic groups, the shahsavan confederation was formed during the reign of the Safavid ruler Shah Abbas (reigned 1587-1629).
Soumak*: wrapped weft weaving technique (embroidery), called suzan in Iran, suzani meaning 'embroidered with a needle'. On the reverse side, the wool threads are intentionally left. On old soumaks, these wool threads were thick and had the function of insulation.
