"Great 17th Century Flemish Painting, Rinaldo And Armida"
COD 01014Great Flemish painting from the first half of the 17th century. Oil painting on canvas depicting the love story between Rinaldo and Armida told in Jerusalem Delivered, the most important epic poem by Torquato Tasso. Artwork attributable to a contemporary follower of Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641) as the painting is inspired by the original by the great master now exhibited at the Louvre in Paris. The two protagonists are lying in an idyllic landscape and surrounded by splendid cupids. Armida has enchanted Rinaldo thanks to a magic mirror but she too will fall in love with the hero. The soldier renounces his duties as a crusader but his companions in arms arrive and reveal to him that he is under a spell and will bring him back to the Christian ranks. The richness of the draperies, the abundance of figures and the liveliness of the gestures give dynamism to the composition and accentuate the theatrical dimension of the work. 20th century frame in carved, lacquered and gilded wood, with some signs of aging. Painting already restored with relining, replacement of the frame and recoloring in small spots. Overall in good condition. Interior size H 153 x W 120 cm.
