A missionary in South America, he was particularly involved with African slaves. Canonized in 1888, he is liturgically commemorated on September 9. * Godelieve de Gistel (or Godeleine in French Flanders and Wallonia), born in 1045 in Wierre-Effroy and died on July 6, 1070 in Gistel, was a young woman from the Flemish nobility. Abandoned by her husband, whom she never stopped loving, and mistreated by her mother-in-law, she was murdered. She is considered a saint and a martyr. * Saint Gommaire (of Lier), (in Latin: Gummarus), sometimes spelled Gomer, Gommer, Gommaire or Gomaire, born around 717 and died on October 11, 774 in Lier, was a courtier and knight at the court of Pepin the Short. Following serious marital setbacks, he became a hermit in Nivedonck (today, Lier). After his death, a village developed near what had become a place of pilgrimage: this is the origin of the city of Lier.
