Hans Widmer was born in Bern on July 22, 1872. A painter and goldsmith, he trained in Geneva and Munich before leaving for Paris, where he was a student of Benjamin-Constant and Jean-Paul Laurens. Back in Switzerland, he founded an artists' colony in Brienzwiler, in the Bernese Oberland, in 1897 with Edmond Bille and Jakob Herzog, where rural Switzerland would be their main source of inspiration. Hans Widmer died in Bern on December 14, 1925
