Biography:
Jules Gustave Leroy Jr., also known as Jules Le Roy (1856-1921), was a French painter. Born in 1853 and died in 1922 in Paris, he specialized in small-format paintings, primarily depicting animal scenes, especially cats and kittens.
A student of Jules Adolphe Goupil, he debuted at the Salon in 1898 and signed his works "J. LeRoy". He was probably the son of Jules Leroy Senior (1833-1856), who also specialized in depictions of fruits, flowers, and cats.
Jules Gustave Leroy Jr. is known for his representations of kittens, still lifes, and genre scenes. He mainly painted cats in various situations and formats, with a few still lifes of flowers and other animals.
His paintings are scattered and preserved in museums across different countries. Among his notable works is "Chats dans une commode" (1900), an oil on wood panel bequeathed by Henri Selosse in 1924 to the city of Roubaix. This work is currently housed at La Piscine Museum of Art and Industry in Roubaix.
