"Orthodox Icon – Triptych Christ In Majesty – Scene Of Deisis – Archangel Gabriel – Oil "
Dating: Second half of the 19th century (circa 1850–1880) Origin: Eastern Balkans – Northern Greece Triptych of domestic devotion, painted in tempera on carved wood, comprising three panels, two of which are movable, framed by a vermillion red polychrome band. The central panel presents a Deisis: Christ Pantocrator enthroned, blessing with his right hand and holding a cruciform globe in his left hand. At his side, the Virgin Mary, head bowed and hands clasped, and Saint John the Baptist in penitent's habit, pointing to Christ in a gesture of intercession. The inscriptions in ancient Greek identify the holy figures (IC XC, ΜΡ ΘΥ, Ὁ ὪΝ), according to the Byzantine iconographic tradition. The pictorial style, frontal and hieratic, accentuates the symbolic intensity of the gazes and the spiritual density of the scene. The side panels feature the archangels Gabriel (on the left, identified by the letter Γ) and Michael (on the right, identified by Μ), both depicted as winged celestial soldiers, clad in Byzantine breastplates and tunics. Gabriel carries a sacred dish or disc; Michael a prophetic scroll. These two figures of spiritual combat and celestial vigilance frame the Deisis as guardians of the divine mystery. The back of the panel reveals ancient, hand-carved wood, marked by galleries of wood-boring insects that are now inactive. These clues, combined with pictorial wear and visible metal reinforcements, attest to prolonged use and a modest, non-decorative origin, in a context of daily or itinerant prayer. This triptych accompanied the faithful in an inner, often silent piety, deeply rooted in the post-Byzantine Orthodox universe. Condition: wear from use, pictorial accidents, old cracks. Partially eroded polychromy. Structurally stable assembly. Dimensions: Height: 32 cm Width (closed): 20 cm ALL DELIVERIES ARE MADE BY DHL EXPRESS ONLY.
