Bacchus au Repose, also known as Bacchus de Versailles. Model based on the Antique, largely inspired by the statue of Jean-Balthazar KELLER, cast in 1684 and in place at Versailles. Cast by Jean-Jacques DUCEL, born on September 8, 1801 in Marseille, signed JJ DUCEL on the terrace. Established as a Master of Forges at 26, rue du Faubourg Poissonnière in Paris, Ducel owned a foundry in Touraine which was one of the largest art foundries in France. This was taken over a year after his death, in 1878, by the Fonderies du Val d'Osne which continued to produce this model. You will find the photo of the two catalogs below. Our model, probably an order, since it is not reproduced in the catalog, presents two differences with the "catalogued" models, first in the position of the left arm and, second, in the addition of a vine branch ending in the hand. This is to hide the lead pipe allowing the water to gush. In good condition, this statue can be used in the center of a pond as originally, or as a purely decorative ornament.
