We present this vast and harmonious composition, where a characteristic river landscape serves as the backdrop for an exquisite slice of popular life, set in a small village, with the actual town in the distance.
The painting, which has characteristics unmistakably linked to the Flemish culture of the second half of the 17th century, shows iconographic and stylistic similarities, in particular, with the successful work of Théobald Michou (Tournai, 1676 – Antwerp, 1765). Trained in the studio of landscape painter Lucas Achtschellinck in Brussels, he quickly gained recognition, receiving numerous commissions from the French court.
Clearly influenced by the humanistic landscapes of Jan Brueghel the Younger, of whom he was also a pupil, the painter animates them with numerous figures from peasant life, all immersed in a soft atmosphere with golden tones.
Apart from the figure of the duck hunter along the watercourse, the rest of the protagonists are confined to a pleasant family setting, animated by many figures busy in their various daily activities: a mother and grandmother looking after a baby, a young man watching over a herd drinking, old people playing and chatting at a table, another woman cooking, with a dog looking at her curiously.
This is a subject that the painter tackled on several occasions and with varying degrees of variation; by way of comparison, we can mention:
