19th Italian Carved And Painted Marble Fruit Still Life

Fascinating composition of different fruits made of Carrara marble carved and then painted in the manner of the Roman and Florentine workshops of the 19th century. The fruits are contained in a copper basin. There are varieties of apples, oranges, mandarins, pears and figs and also a banana, a tropical fruit imported into Europe by Portuguese colonists in the 17th century. These were real three-dimensional still lifes, masterfully painted to the point that they could be mistaken for real fruit.
Excellent state of preservation.
