Object description :

"12 19th Century William Hutton Ice Cream Sundaes"
Rare and exceptional series of 12 ice cream cups by the English silversmith William Hutton. These cups date from the first half of the 19th century. A magnificent decoration of chiseled foliage adorns the cup and the foot. A very good quality metal. Height: 14 cm Ø at the neck: 8.5 cm Ø at the foot: 7.5 cm Weight of a cup: 200 grams In superb condition, they have passed through the hands of the polisher to revive their former brilliance. The metal is of very good quality and ensures their great robustness. WH hallmark under each cup. For the more picky, I specify a small dent at the foot of one of them but barely visible and which does not affect its stability in any way. William Hutton & Sons Ltd has not always been classified as a limited liability company. Before 1893, the silver business that became William Hutton & Sons Ltd began life simply as William Hutton in 1800. It was in 1800 that William Hutton established his silver business in Birmingham, which later moved to Sheffield in 1832 when it became clear that the company was indeed active in the silversmithing industry. After William's death, the business was continued in the same vein by his son William Carr Hutton, who then renamed it William Hutton & Son. This business form was a partnership between William Carr Hutton and his son Herbert Hutton. In 1863, two years before William Carr Hutton's death, a showroom was opened in London. William Carr Hutton died in 1865, and around 1870, Herbert's older brothers, James Edward Hutton and Robert Hutton, joined the business. The name was then changed to William Hutton & Sons to adapt to the new circumstances. In 1893, the company acquired Rupert Favell & Co, a London-based silverware manufacturer. In the same year, the company became a limited company: William Hutton & Sons Ltd. In 1902, William Hutton & Sons Ltd acquired Creswick & Co, a Sheffield-based silverware manufacturer. With this acquisition, William Hutton & Sons Ltd was able to use the crossed arrow marks of Creswick & Co. In 1930, William Hutton & Sons Ltd went bankrupt. In the same year the company was absorbed by James Dixons & Sons.
