"Cupido - Carlo Zatti - Battista Callegari 1826 .italy -france-neoclassical Grand Tour Drawing"
He was born in Brescello (Reggio Emilia) on 24 September 1809, to Biagio, a doctor of law, and Maria Soliani (Brescello, Parish Archives, Baptisms, 1808-59, n. 118). With his family, in comfortable circumstances, he lived in the district of S. Francesco n. 44 (now via Gilioli), with his brothers Luigi, Federico, Carolina, Zebina and Enrichetta (Zilocchi, 2011, p. 11). After graduating from high school in Reggio Emilia, he studied law in Parma, where he took part in the uprisings against Maria Luisa of Austria in 1831 (Mariotti, 1933), the same year in which he drew a self-portrait of himself on his birthday (Municipality of Brescello). This was followed by his enrollment at the Accademia Atestina in Modena, where he became friends with Alfonso Chierici and Giovanni Fontanesi, acquiring a neoclassical education well represented by Paris presenting the golden apple, dated 1834 (Milan, Caiati). In 1835 he entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, directed by Pietro Benvenuti, who, despite criticism of his drawing style, encouraged him to continue his studies (Ricordi, p. 5). After the S. Filomena for the parish church of Fiumalbo near Modena (La Voce, 1835), inspired by 17th-century models, according to the lesson of the master Giuseppe Bezzuoli, in 1836 came the first academic success in the painted nude. On the occasion of the awards ceremony, he also exhibited The Athlete Milone (La Voce, 1836; Gazzetta di Firenze, 1836), a theme dear to heroic Neoclassicism, which the following year in Modena was purchased by Duke Francesco IV, along with Cupid Meditating a Coup d'Etat (both at the Galleria Estense; Ricordi, pp. 7 s.). The drawing has several tears and losses.
