In contrast to Raphael's fresco in the Stables of the Vatican Palace, the two protagonists are surrounded by a halo and the titles of the books they hold have been erased. The complementary juxtaposition of Plato and Aristotle in Raphael's work is interpreted here as a sermon by St. Paul in Athens.
