Auguste also studiedsculpture under the direction of Bertel Thorwaldsen. Clésinger was alsoparticularly well known for his links with George Sand, whose son-in-law hewas, and Frédéric Chopin, whose tomb he sculpted. Clésinger stayed in Barbizonwhere he came under the influence of Théodore Rousseau and Charles Le Roux. Clésinger made his debut atthe 1843 Salon with a bust of Viscount Jules de Valdahon. At the Salon of 1847,he caused a scandal by presenting his "Womanbitten by a snake". This romantic sculpture was made from a cast ofApollonie Sabatier, Charles Baudelaire's muse.
