French painting from the first half of the 19th century. Tempera on grisaille paper (a monochrome technique) depicting a mythological episode of great charm, Psyche's parents consulting the oracle of Apollo. This is an artwork made by the French manufacturer Dufour and based on drawings by Louis Lafitte and Merry Joseph Blondel. In this particular case, two panels from the series have been placed side by side and framed to create a complete composition (see photo). Legend has it that Psyche's parents, desperate for not being able to find a husband worthy of her divine beauty, go to consult the oracle of Apollo. The answer will be tragic: the girl will have to be taken to a cliff and her husband will be a monster that even the Gods fear. This is the prelude to the legendary story of Love (Cupid) and Psyche from Apuleius' Metamorphoses. In the composition we find all the protagonists of the story, the heartbroken parents embrace their daughter and turn to the statue of the God Apollo, while Eros observes the scene from afar. 20th century frame in carved and lacquered wood, beautifully decorated. Painting already restored with relining and replacement of the frame, overall in good condition. Internal size H 189 x W 106.5 cm.
