Object description :

"Medieval Statuary – Carved Marble Plaque – Gothic Inscription “maria” – Late Period"
Dating: Late 14th – early 15th century (circa 1380–1420) Origin: France – Massif Central or Rhône Valley Votive plaque in sculpted marble, engraved in slight relief with the name MARIA, in a rectangular frame with a double fillet carved with a gradine. The inscription is executed in textured Gothic letters (textura quadrata), typical of French religious inscriptions of the late Middle Ages, particularly in ecclesiastical, monastic and confraternal circles. The structure of the letters – M with upright stems, broken R with angular loop, triangular A, narrow I, second closed A – is based on a strict, controlled outline, without superfluous ornament. This lapidary style, sober and solemn, refers to an exclusively sacred use: that of votive dedications, thresholds of Marian niches or elements of secondary altars. The Latin form “Maria,” and not “Mary,” then prevails in all sacred scriptural uses: liturgical manuscripts, tombstones, antiphonaries, chapel foundations. The word refers to the verbal incarnation of the Virgin, whose name alone, in the language of the Church, is a symbol of intercession. Medieval prayers bear witness to this: – Ave Maria, gratia plena… – Sancta Maria, ora pro nobis… In late-Gothic iconography, the word becomes an image. Its invocative power is enough to consecrate a place. It is found isolated on lintels of rural chapels, effigy bases, or plaques inserted into votive walls, where it acts as a substitute for an icon in forms of refined piety. This block is not an architectural fragment. It is a complete votive object, probably intended for a wall niche, a secondary sanctuary wall, or a small domestic oratory. The choice of marble, a rare material in the countryside, reflects the desire to produce a lasting work, worthy of the name it bears. Condition: excellent state of conservation. Old patina, perfectly legible engraving, uncut edges, no restoration. Dimensions: 29 x 16 cm ALL DELIVERIES ARE MADE BY DHL EXPRESS ONLY.
