"Baroque - Stabat Mater - Statue Of The Virgin In Carved Wood - Polychrome And Gilded Wood - Italy "
Dating: Mid-18th century (around 1750) Origin: Northern Italy Provenance: Private collection, Auvergne – Haute-Loire The silent pain of the Virgin at the foot of the Cross – Late Baroque devotional sculpture This carved, gilded and polychromed wooden statue represents the Virgin Mary, in a posture of sorrowful adoration, her hands crossed on her chest and her face raised to the sky. It belongs to a well-defined iconography: that of the Stabat Mater, the moment of the Crucifixion where Mary stands at the foot of the Cross, in a posture of silence and compassion. Dressed in a deep blue tunic and a golden veil falling over her shoulders, she is sculpted with great sensitivity, in a style still imbued with Italian religious Baroque, but already refined, typical of the production of northern Italy in the mid-18th century. The work rests on a canted base painted in faux red marble, which reinforces its liturgical anchoring. It was probably part of a private devotional set or side altar, designed to frame a Crucifixion. Please note: This statue is from a sculpted group also including a figure of Saint John, made in the same workshop and style. The two can be sold separately, but the whole comes into its own when presented together.
