Original drawing – View of a park.
Charcoal and pastel on paper. Circa 1856.
White and blue highlights. Signature stamp lower left (Lugt.5991).
Annotated by Boudin “April morning”
Magnificent study by the pre-impressionist master, with exceptionally large dimensions for the artist. We find the tranquility of a park in the first foliage of spring, enlivened by a few characters sketched in Boudin’s very particular style. Two statues watch over this assembly, the most visible of the two seems to be a helmeted Minerva leaning on her shield.
Our drawing is the counterpart of another with a similar subject and dimensions preserved at the Musée du Petit Palais under the reference PPD5716. This drawing is dated April 1856. It was in this same year that Boudin, still young, took under his wing a talented young caricaturist who would become the undisputed master of Impressionism: Claude Monet.
Provenance:
Marcel Boudin Collection, great-nephew of the artist and legatee of his estate, Rouen
Jacques Hamon Collection, Le Havre
Walter Goetz Collection, Paris.
The work is registered in the Eugène Boudin Archives of the Galerie Brame et Lorenceau.
