Selon la tradition carmélitaine, la Vierge Marie serait apparue à saint Simon Stock, prieur général de l'Ordre du Carmel au milieu du XIIIe siècle[53]. La première référence à cette apparition mariale, datée de la fin du XIVe siècle, indique que « saint Simon était un Anglais, un homme d'une grande sainteté et d'un grand dévouement, qui demandait toujours à la Vierge de favoriser son Ordre avec privilège singulier. La Vierge lui apparut tenant le scapulaire Brun à la main en disant : “Ceci est pour vous et le vôtre un privilège ; celui qui y meurt sera sauvé” »[54]. Un scapulaire est un vêtement semblable à un tablier qui fait partie de la tenue des religieux carmélitains[55] et, dans le contexte initial, la promesse de la Bienheureuse Vierge Marie était l'assurance que les religieux qui persévéreraient dans leur vocation seraient sauvés.
