"Pair Of Large Blue Porcelain Fô Dogs "
Very beautiful and large pair of blue enamel porcelain fo dogs. Fo dogs (or Fu, sometimes written “Foo”) are traditional Chinese statues representing guardian lions. Although they are called “dogs”, they are actually stylized representations of lions, an animal that did not exist naturally in China but was introduced via trade with India and other cultures. They are very present in imperial architecture, in front of Buddhist temples, palaces, royal tombs, and sometimes in front of wealthy houses or official buildings to symbolize protection. Note a small crack, not broken
