"Anthropomorphic Mask - Nepal, 19th Century Or Earlier"
Anthropomorphic mask - Nepal, 19th century or earlier. Carved wooden mask with remains of polychromy and white kaolin. This type of mask with a mouth appearing to be closed by a grid is relatively rare and the reason for its use has been lost over time. Some suggest that it could be a demon mask. Strong prominent nose with an iron ring. The mask is not in good condition, formerly attacked by wood-boring insects (it has been treated against it) and restored. Cracks in the wood. Missing parts. 24cm x 20cm 663gr Literature and museums: In the whites of the eyes, Primitive masks of Nepal (Musée du quai Branly) page 28 https://www.quaibranly.fr/fr/explorer-les-collections/base/Work/action/show/notice/383716-masque Inventory number: 70.2003.1.23
