An elegant and finely crafted Japanese smoking set comprising four elements:

• A rectangular tray, made of papier-mâché with silver mounts, featuring subtle lacquer decoration and traditional Japanese craftsmanship.

• A circular ashtray, combining papier-mâché and glass, with fine detailing around the rim and base.

• A match holder, crafted from engraved silver, showcasing intricate patterns and a refined patina consistent with Meiji-era silverwork.

• A cigar box, constructed from silver and wood, the exterior adorned with gilded inlays and mixed-metal engravings depicting a rooster, hen, and chrysanthemums—symbols of prosperity and longevity in Japanese culture.

The lid of the cigar box is signed with the engraved characters 史信刻 (“Shinobu koku” or “Fuminobu koku”), indicating the work of a skilled Meiji-period artisan. The combination of shibuichi, gilding, and naturalistic motifs reflects the influence of traditional Japanese sword-fitting craftsmanship, repurposed into high-quality export art during the Meiji era.
