Portrait of the chemist Auguste Laurent, born near Saint-Maurice on November 14, 1807, died in Paris on April 15, 1853. He was one of the creators of atomic notation and a precursor of modern organic chemistry and atomic theory. Auguste Laurent was the predecessor and mentor of Charles Gerhardt. He was appointed professor of chemistry at the University of Bordeaux in 1838.
