Les Gueux
These 25 etchings are amongst the most popular, the most copied and imitated in the work of Callot.
we only know a small study of three cats.
It is commonly agreed that this series where made at the end of his stay in Florence and that the etchings were only printed in Nancy around 1622-1623.
First on filigrane paper with the double C watermark.
This suite of etchings by Callot had a tremendous influence on the arts: engravers such as Rembrandt (fig.3), Dassonville, Wenzel Hollar, draughtsman as Adriaen van de Venne, Gavarni, painters as Magnasco, and on decorative arts such as the statues of Manwisse and the porcelain of Saxe and Capodimonte.
