HISTORY
Qashqai rugs are knotted by the nomadic Qashqai (or Ghashghai) tribes in the high mountains of southwest Iran. Once nomadic, these shepherds and weavers are now semi-nomadic, having previously lived in the provinces of Fars, Khuzestan, and southern Isfahan. Today, the vast majority of them are gathered in the region surrounding Shiraz, which was once the center of the Persian Empire. Historically, the Qashqai tribes migrated twice a year between their winter pastures near the Persian Gulf and their summer pastures in the Zagros Mountains. Rugs, as well as the art of weaving rugs, kilims, bags, satchels, tents, ribbons, and other ornaments, are an integral part of nomadic culture and heritage. Today, these highly valued decorations can be found in many modern homes around the world. The wool and hair used to make Qashqai rugs are harvested directly from the tribes' herds of sheep, goats, and horses. Many of the distinctive patterns of this culture are passed down from generation to generation and woven from memory. These rugs are made on horizontal looms, and the weaver sits on the already woven part of the rug while weaving the rest. Qashqai rugs can feature a multitude of artistic combinations, each more striking than the last, which, always in shades of red and brown, represent nomadic life. These rugs are very robust and not too susceptible to dirt due to their dark colors, making them an excellent choice for high-traffic areas such as entryways, kitchens, or hallways. Patterns often include beautiful medallions, but also depictions of everyday life, birds, flowers, trees, human forms, and four-legged animals. Weavers also draw inspiration from the frescoes and columns of Persepolis, the capital of Persia during the Achaemenid period. These rugs, knotted a little more roughly with high-quality raw materials, typically have a knot density of around 180,000 knots per square meter, which does not necessarily make them poor quality rugs. On the contrary, it only increases the pace and efficiency of their production. Extremely robust, Qashqai rugs are very famous
throughout the world because of their detailed and primitive patterns. Contact me for more information and to know the conditions of sale.
