"Pair Of Large Cabriolet Armchairs, Late Louis XV Period. "
Interesting pair of armchairs from the end of the Louis XV period, marked by a transitional style between the Louis XV style and the birth of the Louis XVI style. Of fine manufacturing quality, this pair of cabriolet-backed seats were made of painted beech, they have the advantage of a nice seat width, making them very comfortable, unlike many cabriolet-backed models where you feel cramped. Corresponding to the transitional style, it has curves and cutouts that are still very Louis XV, with in particular whiplash armrest consoles, with this scroll entering the seat, the base is resolutely new for this period, inspired by the return to classicism, it is similar to Greek and Roman architecture, with turned feet in a sheathed shape marked with grooves, thus recalling the columns of antiquity. This interesting period showing the evolution of styles by having two coexist in the same seat is around the years 1765 to 1775. We note a particularity in the realization of the seat belts, these are no longer interrupted at the level of the heads of masses by squares enclosing sculpted motifs, here the groove dug on the belt crosspieces continues without interruption to turn all around the chair, only small applique discs underline the front angle of the chairs. This way of making the belt will be very little used. The seat woods are in very good condition, of beautiful design these chairs are solid and can quite be used, the upholstery without old but still good, they are covered with an old Louis XV style fabric of beautiful quality and very decorative, this fabric has gaps at the level of the seats and the cuffs.
