The artist lived in Alsace in his youth, which he left at the time of the annexation to join the Foreign Legion. North Africa inspired him for many orientalist paintings. In 1920 he married and settled in Burgundy in Villeneuve sur Yonne where his fame grew by becoming a very great landscape painter before dying in 1951, leaving behind a very important work.
