"Traditional Isan Frog Box"
Old traditional box representing a frog or a toad in lacquered wood, originating from the Isan region in Thailand. Early 20th century. This auspicious animal is associated with Buddhism, these containers are entrusted with prayers for rain, fertility, good harvests… It is in Isan that loom shuttles were also made in a similar style, the region has a strong tradition of textile production. Entirely handmade, the box displays both a sober and sophisticated design like many productions of the time, it is a functional and spiritual object. Provenance: Estate of the collector and Asian art dealer Claude de Marteau. L 18cm x H 15 cm x W 15 cm The box is in very good condition, the crack that can be seen on the back is sealed in its lacquer, it does not open.
