Small Transition period chest of drawers stamped J PETIT for Jean Petit and struck by the Jurande de Paris JME, of rectangular quadrangular shape with a tripartite front with a double projection, domed in the central part; it is inlaid with rosewood in cartouches with amaranth wood buttress, decorated with Greek frets delimited by natural and stained boxwood fillets on a frame entirely of oak. The front uprights are rounded with an internal recess positioned set back from the profile of the front; the rear ones with a projection, the whole rests on thin and arched feet connected by polylobed crosspieces. Our chest of drawers opens with three long drawers, one on top of the other, two of which are wider with a concealed crosspiece. These are locked by atypical locks; that of the lower drawer positioned at the base, with its bolt located below the drawer, fits into the apron of the lower crosspiece. This ingenious system allows the handles of the draw and the lock entries to be offset from the central decoration. Beautiful ornamentation of gilded chiseled bronzes such as lock entries in ribbon knots, mobile pull handles, apron, and sabots raised with acanthus leaves. The whole is topped with a purple breccia of peach blossoms whose molded contours with clearances and projections follow the frame. The stamp J Petit and the jurande are struck on the side edge of the crosspiece of the top drawer. Dimensions on the marble: width 95.6cm – depth 50.7cm – height 83.4cm Jean PETIT received his letters of mastery in Paris on October 5, 1767 and died before 1782. He was the paterfamilias of the Petit cabinetmaking dynasty, he was established on rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine, opposite rue Traversière. An elegant chest of drawers with a generous gale in colored wood marquetry signed by Jean Petit was notably included in the old Paul Eudel collection. Fleur de Pêcher marble is a veined marble with a purple background dotted with white, red and pink veined spots. It evokes flower shapes, hence its name. The original quarry, opened in the 17th century, is located in Serravezza in the Carrara basin, in Italy. In the 17th century, it was widely used in religious decoration. The Regency period fireplace in the Oval Salon of the Hôtel de Soubise in Paris is a perfect example.
