A watercolourist, Bourgoin was a student of Jean Baptiste Fortuné de Fournier and painted mainly landscapes. He exhibited at the Galerie Bernheim-Jeune in 1888. He collaborated with Théodore de Banville and became Sarah Bernhardt's teacher; he painted a portrait of the tragedienne in 1889. The Musée du Luxembourg has several of his paintings. His second passion was musical composition, and several of his symphonic pieces were broadcast4.
