Title 1 (Complete set): Helden-, Staats- und Lebens-Geschichte Friedrichs des Andern, jetzt Königs in Preussen
Title 2 (5th Vol): Geschichte des 1758. und 1759sten Jahres
Author: Christian Friedrich Hempel
Publisher: Johann Ulrich Cotta, the Younger, Tübingen
Date of publication: 1761
Binding: Hardcover
Language: German
Country: Germany
Dimensions: 18cm x 11cm
Size: Vol 5: 885 pp. 8 engravings by Johann Conrad Müller
Notes: The 5th volume of Hempel's 9-volume masterly study of Frederick the Great covering the years 1758 and 1759 with the brilliant engravings by J. C Müller depicting the deployment of formations for each major battle. This is a first edition and a rare copy of a reprint by J. U. Cotta the Younger in Tübingen, which caused a scandal in the German publishing world. The text is identical to the more common Leipzig and Frankfurt editions (minus the author's prologue in which he accuses Cotta of being a thief. The famous publishing house J. G. Cotta had fallen on hard times and had started to reprint unauthorized editions. A few decades later, J. F. Cotta would restore the reputation and prestige of this great publisher from Tübingen. A beautiful collector's item, either as part of the series or as a stand-alone souvenir that marks a moment controversial in the history of the German publishing industry.

Condition
Good condition, the cotton paper remains in excellent condition, although the cover is worn at the edges, where the leather has been damaged. The original defects in the binding and printing remain
