Object description :

"Johann-daniel Heimlich (1740-1796) - Monument Project"
Johann Daniel HEIMLICH (Strasbourg 1740 - 1796)
Project for a funeral monument for Salomé Schaaff
Pen and brown and black ink, brown and black wash, white gouache highlights on pencil lines
30.2 x 23.4 cm (unframed)
Signed and dated ‘1787’ lower right
Tribute in the centre to the husband of the deceased Lucas Schaaff
Framed

From Friend to Friend, the drawing is intended as a tribute to Salomé Schaaff, the deceased wife of Strasbourg alderman Lucas Schaff. Heimlich was close to this important Strasbourg couple, whose portrait he painted 5 years earlier (Audap, 06/04/2023, lot no. 53). This is a piece of local history very much influenced by neoclassism, with the city of Rome in the background. The text is probably in Schaaff's hand and pays tribute to his late wife.
