The painting was considered lost and had only come down to us in the form of a contemporary engraving by John Simon (1675? -1751). By a happy coincidence, it was rediscovered in a private German collection. The importance of Laguerre's painting had already been recognized during the latter's lifetime, otherwise Simon would not have made an engraving after the painting. Inv. No. 0.662 €4,800
