The painter’s style is very recognizable. Indeed, the play of shadows and light is remarkable thanks to the painter’s colorful palette, which has captured the atmosphere of the Algerian markets.
The animated scene is rich in detail.

The gouache is in very good condition, the colors are bright.

Léon Cauvy (1874-1933)

Léon Cauvy, born on 12 January 1874 in Montpellier (Hérault) and died on 3 January 1933 in Algiers, was a French painter.
Léon Cauvy entered the School of Fine Arts in Montpellier in 1890 and quickly obtained awards for drawings, wash, projection of shadows and perspectives. His training was rigorous and oriented him towards decoration. He then participated in the Salons of 1901, 1902, 1903 with decorative works.

At the 1907 Salon, he received a painting medal and in the same year he received a scholarship for the villa Abd-el-Tif in Algiers. He is one of the first two winners with Paul Jouve in the competition for access to this new institution and falls under the spell of Algeria. He achieved great success in Paris in 1909, at the exhibition of Orientalist painters, he exhibited fifty paintings from his stay in Algeria and decided to remain in Algeria. The light of Algiers, the life of the city, its port, its inhabitants, their costumes, small trades, Arab markets, gardens, but also cemeteries are all subjects of inspiration.

In 1909, at the end of his residence at the villa Abd-el-Tif, he became director of the School of Fine Arts of Algiers until his death. André Greck was his pupil. His presence, the quality of his painting and his teaching have been assets for the development of the cultural life of Algiers.
