After completing his humanities studies, Pierre Lélu successively went to the school of François Boucher and that of Gabriel-François Doyen. He went to Italy for the first time around 1761, making copies of works by Raphael, Domenichino and other famous artists. During this period, he also produced numerous compositions of animated caprices of ruins. 4 On his return to Paris, around 1767, he entered the service of the Marquis Jean-Baptiste-Charles-François de Clermont d'Amboise (1728-1792), whom he followed to various courts in Europe as secretary to the embassy. Around 1775, he went to Spain and Portugal, then returned to Italy. In 1777, he was in Marseille, where he was appointed a member of the academy. He then returned to Paris and lodged at 17 rue Montmartre4.
