Object description :

"Carved Wooden Box With Bird Decoration Attributed To Bagard 17th Century - 18th Century Box"
Rectangular box with cut sides resting on four small feet, the lid with rich carved decoration of fantastic birds, the side parts more summarily decorated with floral and plant motifs. The inside of the lid is covered with a gallant scene in chromolithography. An old handwritten note in ink specifies: "This box was sculpted by César Bagard born in Nancy in 1639". A statement that should be considered with caution, especially since César Bagard would rather have been born in 1620 according to the date of his baptism. However, other documents have mentioned the date of 1639 in the past. In any case, it is more likely the work of one of his followers who officiated in the Nancy workshop. Dimensions: length 26.5 cm - width 18 cm - height 9.5 cm. Good general condition. There is a small crack in the upper right corner, the lock is missing and the hinges may have been modified later.
