Pair of portraits of a couple of mandarins, gouache painting under glass on a black background. Circa 1850/60.
Original frames in carved wood and original wooden background.
Perfect condition.
We regularly come across these portraits for sale or in collections in a more or less naive and refined style and painted "on the assembly line" according to a cliché. Ours are by a very good artist who has endeavored to render the beautiful physiognomy of his models and who has been able to render the richness of the costumes. We will also note the accessories such as the beautiful necklace probably made of precious wood that the man wears, his snuffbox as well as the fan that his wife holds.
This type of portraits of Chinese people in traditional costume were painted in workshops in Canton in China or in its region.
They were intended for the European market and for lovers of exoticism. The carved wooden frames in the Louis XV style were probably manufactured in Europe in the ports of Holland which received the merchandise from China. Their style allowed these paintings from elsewhere to fit into the classic interiors of the time.

Frames 61x45 cm
