Amusing pair of painted canvases, each depicting a monkey dressed as a man from the 19th century. A painting represents a drinking monkey: he holds a glass of wine in his right hand, a bottle in his left hand, the corkscrew on his belt, his feathered hat placed next to him. The other painting represents a monkey taking tobacco, a violin held under his left arm, a pipe and a vase placed near him. The colors of the clothes are mainly bright blue and red, dark background and side light. Old cracks on the entirety of each work. Golden baguette frame with interior ogee and pearl frieze, flat red-brown lacquered outer edge. Small scattered wear to the gilding; cracks and wear to the lacquer. Dimensions of each frame: approximately: 27 cm x 21.5 cm. These paintings have been cleaned by a professional restorer. Note: the “sparkling” look of each monkey. The antics: exoticism, humor and parody; a pictorial genre very fashionable in the 17th and 18th century, which continued into the 19th century and beyond... Delivery: €20 for mainland France.
