Student of Lehmann, Laugée, and Dagnan-Bouveret, he also took courses at the Académie Julian. He exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français. from 1880 to his death in 1922. First married in 1880 to Claire-Émilie Hulot (1860-1900), he married his second wife, in 1901, Marie-Geneviève Paing (1878-1975), native of Caen, also a painter Part of the workshop funds of Émile Thivier and Marie Paing was donated by his daughter Françoise Thivier (1905-2003) to the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Indre, in Châteauroux.
