The fan was a very popular tool at the time, because of its characteristic of being portable and handy, as well as a real collector’s item. It consists of two main parts: the pavese, consisting of the canvas (painted, printed or not), which can have in addition an embroidery, a lace (especially in European models), or be made of a simple sheet of printed paper and the rigid and folding base.

The folding fan was invented by the Japanese between the seventh and ninth centuries perhaps inspired by the bat’s wing mechanism. In Europe it was known since the late fifteenth century after its importation from China, brought by the Portuguese who had opened trade routes to the Far East.

Introduced to France by Catherine De' Medici, it became the favourite object of Elizabeth I of England, soon becoming an aristocratic as well as artistic object (landscape painting and domestic and social scenes are a habitual subject in page design).

Later its use extended to all social strata, becoming on the one hand increasingly elaborate, intended to be exhibited in large parties or hung on the walls as a decorative object, on the other more standardized, Lightweight and durable for daily summer use.

It also represented an extraordinary form of communication: during the eighteenth century the girls of the nobility were taught to handle their fans in their bearing lessons conducted by their dance masters. In the nineteenth century Duvelleroy, the most important factory of fans, published a kind of vocabulary of gestures and ways used in the language of the fan. Since 1991, the Fan Museum  in Greenwich has been open to the public and has also held themed exhibitions in different venues, such as the Fabulous Fan exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in the spring of 1995.

The Royal Palace of Caserta seems to be recognizable in the range under examination, suggesting a manufacture of Campania origin.
