St. John depicted standing occupies almost the entire space of the oval and wears a green robe covered by a broad red mantle. The expression of the face turned with a sorrowful look ideally towards Christ on the cross and the gesture of the crossed hands in prayer demonstrate a feeling of resigned compassion. A work of refined execution technique datable between the 17th and 18th centuries, it is evidently a derivation of the apostle depicted in the well-known composition with the 'Crucifixion' painted by Guido Reni for the Church of the Capuchins of Mount Calvary between 1617 and 1618, today conserved in the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Bologna, from whose iconographic model many artists such as Rubens, Simon Vouet, Claude Mellan and many others were inspired, who copied the famous work throughout the 17th century and beyond. Oil painting on canvas later transferred onto a panel and inserted into a 19th century gilded frame.
