Object description :

"Burma, Early 20th Century, Bronze Tattoo Needle Counterweight Representing A Nat"
Burma, early 20th century, very pretty and unusual bronze tattoo needle counterweight representing a Nat whose body is covered with various animals, notably monkeys. It is very nicely highlighted by a wooden base made at the request of the previous owner. The Nats or Naks are princely figures deified in Burma for many centuries in parallel with Buddhism. Their cult is practiced with the aim of obtaining particular protections. Tattooing has been, for centuries, a true art of living in Burma. Soldiers tattooed their faces to impress the enemy; as well as the neck to recognize their body. Women frequently tattooed their faces. This beautiful utensil is used to practice traditional tattooing. It consists of three parts, the counterweight, the body in which it is fixed and then the needle also fixed at the other end. These three parts are clearly present as you can see in the photographs.
Dimensions: Height of the counterweight alone 23 cm (33 cm with its pretty wooden base). The scale indicator in the last photograph is a small model of a lighter from a brand known to everyone. Total length with body and needle 56.8 cm.
Good condition.
