Beautiful Pair Of Pastels Louis XVI Period
18th century French school, follower of Alexandre Roslin, beautiful pair of pastels representing the portrait of Frederick V Landgrave of Hesse-Homburg ( 1748-1820 ) and Caroline of Hesse-Darmstadt ( 1748-1821 ).
Although born under the old European regime, Frederick V lived through the Enlightenment, the French Revolution, the fall of the Holy Roman Empire, the rise and fall of Napoleon I, the Congress of Vienna and the establishment of the new geopolitical order in Europe and Germany.
On 27 September 1768, he married Princess Caroline of Hesse-Darmstadt, the eldest daughter of Louis IX of Hesse-Darmstadt and his wife Caroline of Palatinate-Deux-Ponts-Birkenfeld.
They had fifteen children, eleven of whom survived to adulthood.
These pastels have their original glass, but there is a slight crack in the top right of the portrait of the young man, which does not need to be replaced.
