Ceres, the goddess of the earth and fertility in Roman religion, is beautifully depicted with a torch in her left hand, symbolizing her ability to illuminate and nourish the earth. In his right hand he holds a full sheaf of wheat, representing his generosity and his role in ensuring the prosperity and fertility of the fields. Her figure exudes a quiet majesty, reflecting her role as a maternal deity and protector of life.
Next to Ceres, we find the figure of Jupiter, the supreme God of sky and light in Roman mythology. His commanding presence is evident through his regal posture and strong facial expression. In one hand he holds the lightning bolt, a symbol of his sovereign power and his ability to influence the natural world with his will. At his feet stands an eagle, a symbol associated with Jupiter and often identified as the father of the Gods, representing his supremacy and dominion over the celestial kingdom.
This pair of sculptures not only embody the art and craftsmanship of the 18th century Tuscany with their beauty and quality, but also convey the power of the deities they depict and all the aesthetic characteristics of our classicism.
