The standing Buddha, carved in solid wood on its lotiform base, Burma, early Mandalay period, mid-19th century. The posture is natural, his serene face shows a slight smile. The eyes are made of glass for the sake of realism. The wood is lacquered and gilded, richly decorated with inclusions of glass beads, the Awakened One holds his monastic robe (uttarasanga) in his left hand. He holds the myrobalan fruit in his right hand, an allusion to the healing power of Buddha. A large crack runs through the monastic robe (V.photos), it is normal wear at this location on old pieces: We can place reinforcement tabs on the rear part on request but this crack will no longer evolve, it is necessary just be careful when handling the part. Provenance: Estate of the merchant and collector Claude de Marteau. Sold with certificate of provenance Find out more about the life and pieces of Claude de Marteau? https://www.thecdmcollection.be/ We have a very limited quantity of these pieces, all from the same period and origin. H 147 cm x L 57 cm x D 20 cm Height of the sculpture without its base: 127 cm
