In the center is an elephant and inscribed "Assaye" in commemoration of the Battle of Addaye.
The buckle is hallmarked on the back: with the bust of Queen Victoria, the anchor and the lion passant (Birmingham hallmarks), the maker's mark, and a capital "L" (1808).

The battle took place on September 23, 1803, near the village of Assaye, in western India. The British and native troops were awarded the battle honor of Assaye with the emblem of the General Order of the Elephant.
