Pair Of Louis XV Period Confessional Armchairs In Silk Lampas
Pair of wingback armchairs in beige lacquered walnut. France, Louis XV period (circa 1745–1760)
A rare pair of wingback armchairs in beige lacquered walnut, representative of the full development of the Louis XV style, a period during which curves, free lines, and naturalistic ornamentation reached their zenith.
These chairs are distinguished by a flat back with a richly carved central cutout. The undulating armrest supports, finely carved with acanthus leaves, complement the cabriole legs and the molded rail adorned with foliate shells, an emblematic ornamental signature of the Rococo style. The side rails are decorated with a scallop shell, a motif alluding to travel and the great European aristocratic journeys, particularly the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.
The exquisitely crafted carved decoration testifies to the work of a leading Parisian workshop, attuned to the decorative trends influenced by the ornamentalists of Louis XV's reign.
The restoration was carried out using traditional techniques, preserving the spirit and comfort of the 18th century: upholstery in ivory silk lampas with a floral motif (Italian manufacture), tone-on-tone silk piping, and a fitted feather cushion. This textile choice evokes the luxurious fabrics produced in the great European manufactories (notably Lyon and Genoa) intended for aristocratic furniture.
Through their exquisite carving, original lacquer, generous proportions, and excellent state of preservation, these bergère armchairs magnificently illustrate the sensual and refined elegance of Louis XV furniture. These pieces are in keeping with the tradition of Parisian workshops, closely resembling the work of the chair makers of the Faubourg Saint-Antoine and the Louvre district, while also reflecting an aristocratic restraint characteristic of furniture found in country residences or châteaux.
Dimensions: Height: 108 cm Width: 72 cm Depth: 81 cm
Certificate of authenticity included.
