Bucket Pile Or So-called Charlemagne Pile
Germany, late 18th - early 19th century
Bronze and brass
H. 4; L 5.2 cm

The circular pile weighing one kilogram, or two pounds, is made up of nine concentric brass weights that fit into each other. Each weight is equal to the sum of all the weights it can hold.
One-kilogram bucket weighing batteries were introduced in 1799.

They were marked with various hallmarks, including a galloping horse, a "B" and an "r".
