Roman period, 1st century BCE
Orange carnelian H. 1.2 cm (0.5 inches)
Very rare
The subject of this carved gem is mysterious. The character's attitude (a determined stride with one finger raised in the air), the unusual facial features, the equipment consisting of a double spear and a harness (?), as well as the use of the drill for engraving (cf ankle, knee, heel...) are all criteria for including this gem in the rare corpus of gems depicting pygmies, produced in the 1st century BCE.
