Miniature On Ivory From The Empire Period
Circular ivory miniature representing a young woman in bust and white dress. She wears a coral half-dress including a pearl necklace and a pair of earrings. Her hair is pulled up and held in place by a headband. She holds in her arms a young child in a white outfit with a lace collar. The scene takes place in an interior opening with a curtain. Wooden frame and gilded brass rim. The theme of childhood appears very late in 18th century painting. Sensitive to the ideas of Jean-Jacques Rousseau developed in Emile, desiring a return to naturalness and simplicity, many artists from the end of the 18th century such as Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun began to paint young children. This miniature on ivory is a good example of this thematic revival of the end of the 18th century.
