"The Peniches Along The Canal. Prosper De Wit (1860-1947). "
Prosper de Wit is a Belgian painter born in Antwerp in 1860 and died in Schaerbeek in 1947 (Prosper Joseph Pierre de Wit). He studied at the Antwerp Academy under the direction of H. De Braekeleer. He had a preference for interiors, landscapes and cityscapes, among others. He attributed an important role to nuances of color and light and painted poetic atmospheric canvases. His work from the 1880s is characterized by a rather pasty treatment of paint combined with the use of deep, saturated colors. These colors have as little to do with reality as those of the first Fauvists. In 1883 he was co-founder of the “If | Can” circle in Antwerp. Works among others in the museums of Antwerp and Liège. This very luminous painting, painted on panel, represents barges moored on the edge of a canal (perhaps Amsterdam...) we recognize here the dexterity of a master of painting from this period.
